The Ultimate Desert Home

The Ultimate Desert Home

Some residences transcend design trends and become timeless expressions of architectural vision. This remarkable hilltop estate in Palm Desert is one such home — a project long celebrated for its scale, craftsmanship, and enduring relevance.

Set high above the desert floor, the residence commands sweeping views of mountains, golf greens, and the glowing valley below. Its architecture, conceived by world-renowned designer Guy Dreier, blends powerful geometry with natural materials that feel both bold and harmonious within the landscape. Panther slate from India, warm natural woods, copper roofing, titanium detailing, French limestone, and expansive walls of glass come together to form a structure that feels grounded yet expansive.

Spanning approximately 32,000 square feet under roof, the home is composed of seven bedrooms, twelve baths, six kitchens, and a series of intimate gathering spaces that balance grandeur with comfort. Though monumental in scale, the interiors are thoughtfully curated to feel warm, inviting, and surprisingly personal. Terraces extend the living experience outdoors, supporting both quiet evenings and large-scale entertaining, all surrounded by water features, gardens, and dramatic architectural forms.

Adaptive Design Group had the privilege of working closely with the architect and design team to craft a lighting and technology approach worthy of such a distinctive residence. From the earliest stages, lighting was treated not as an afterthought, but as a defining architectural element — shaping movement, enhancing materials, and reinforcing the home’s sculptural presence.

As daylight fades, the estate transforms. Turquoise and amber tones subtly emerge against the desert sky, while carefully engineered illumination reveals every curve, plane, and texture. Outdoor lounges glow with warmth around modern fire features. Pathways guide movement with quiet precision. Pools mirror the surrounding light in liquid symmetry. The landscape feels alive, yet never overstated.

Inside, the experience continues seamlessly. Expansive indoor-outdoor transitions dissolve the boundary between exterior and interior spaces. Dining areas, art displays, and gathering rooms are layered with light that adapts naturally throughout the evening. One of the home’s most striking features — a fully integrated aquarium tunnel — becomes a moment of theatrical calm, its lighting carefully balanced to honor both spectacle and marine life.

Every lighting decision was made in collaboration with the broader design team, ensuring that illumination enhanced the architecture rather than competing with it. Natural light, refined color temperatures, and discreet control systems work together to create spaces that feel alive by day and magnetic by night.

This residence is truly The Ultimate Desert Home and remains a benchmark for what integrated architectural lighting can achieve — not simply making a space visible, but making it unforgettable.

A New Era of Optical Framing: The Advancement of Merlin Light® Technology

Welcome to A New Era of Optical Framing. Adaptive Design Group is pleased to highlight a major advancement in one of the trusted products we regularly specify for our clients: the Merlin Light® Fine Art Optical Framing Projector line. We continue to promote it as a preferred solution because of its reliability, performance, and alignment with our design standards. The latest update features Dimmable High-Performance Color-Correct LED technology, engineered for both new construction and retrofit applications in today’s finest residential environments.

For more than fifty years, Merlin Lights® has been trusted by architects, interior designers, and custom home builders for its unparalleled ability to project, sculpt, and frame light with precision. This evolution introduces the refined LED and reflector system required for true gallery-grade performance—now further optimized for luxury residential, art galleries, hospitality, and commercial applications.

Why Merlin Light® Remains the Gold Standard in Art Illumination

As professional Lighting Designers, we know that art illumination is one of the most nuanced challenges in the built environment. The internal dialogue is constant: Track lights, wall wash, pin spots, etc. Our discipline teaches us that the true stars of a space are the art, the architecture, and the interiors—allowing the lighting to recede with intention, except when it appears as a curated decorative fixture.

That is why our team continues to rely on the magic of the Merlin Light®.

Hidden. Color-correcting. Dimmable. And remarkably precise—casting even, controlled light that stays perfectly within the edges of the canvas. No spill light. No distractions. Just a dramatic presentation of the artist’s work, exactly as intended.

At its core, the Merlin Light® is more than a fixture—it becomes an extension of the artwork itself, enhancing the emotional experience as people gather to appreciate the illuminated piece. It is the quiet, invisible partner that lets the art tell the story.

Magical Mountain Retreat

Magical Mountain Retreat

Mountain retreat magic. This custom residence is the perfect blend of rugged elegance and refined design.

From the handcrafted stone walls to the vaulted wooden beam ceilings, every element reflects thoughtful materiality and timeless craftsmanship. And at the heart of it all — a stunning decorative chandelier that brings warmth, dimension, and a sense of welcome to every corner of the space.

Lighting isn’t just functional — it tells a story, accentuates texture, and defines atmosphere. This home is a testament to how great design makes a space feel as unforgettable as it looks.

Magical Mountain Retreat: Where mountain serenity meets design excellence.

Mountain homes present a unique opportunity for lighting design. Natural materials, expansive volumes, and dramatic architectural forms call for illumination that enhances character without overwhelming it. In spaces like this, lighting must respect the authenticity of the environment while introducing comfort, clarity, and warmth after sunset.

Here, light is used to reveal texture and craftsmanship. Stone surfaces gain depth through subtle grazing, allowing their natural variation to emerge softly. Wooden beams are gently illuminated to emphasize scale and structure, reinforcing the architectural rhythm of the space without distraction. The lighting never competes with the materials — it supports them.

The decorative chandelier serves as a focal point, anchoring the room both visually and emotionally. Its presence adds refinement while maintaining a sense of approachability, bridging the gap between rustic elements and modern comfort. Surrounding layers of illumination provide balance, ensuring the space feels cohesive from every angle.

Equally important is how the space feels. Carefully controlled light levels create an atmosphere of calm and retreat, encouraging relaxation and connection. Transitions between areas are smooth and intuitive, guided by light that feels natural rather than imposed. The home responds to its setting, embracing the quiet elegance of its surroundings.

Early collaboration between architecture, interior design, and lighting design allows spaces like this to come together seamlessly. By considering lighting at the blueprint stage, opportunities emerge to integrate fixtures discreetly, shape volumes intentionally, and preserve the integrity of the design.

This mountain retreat is more than a residence — it is an experience shaped by light, material, and intention. A place where evenings unfold slowly, conversations linger, and the environment feels both grounded and elevated.

If you’re envisioning a mountain home where lighting enhances craftsmanship and atmosphere in equal measure, we invite you to connect with Adaptive Design Group and begin the design journey.

Embodying Timeless Artistry
Embodying Timeless Artistry 750 750 Adaptive Design Group, Inc.

Embodying Timeless Artistry

Embodying Timeless Artistry

A residence that embodies timeless artistry and the full breadth of what we do at Adaptive Design Group.

From concept to completion — including luxury architectural lighting design, custom illumination, electrical engineering, motorized shades & smart programming — this home showcases how integrated design elevates every space. Every detail was crafted with intention, functionality, and beauty in mind.

We’re honored that work like this continues to be recognized, including awards for our Founder & CEO Glenn Merlin Johnson and Principal Jared Britton — a testament to the passion and expertise behind every project.

Timeless. Thoughtful. Inspired. This is what exceptional design looks like.

At its core, this residence reflects a philosophy of integration. Architecture, interior design, lighting, and technology were considered as a unified whole from the earliest stages of planning. This holistic approach allows each discipline to support the others, resulting in spaces that feel effortless, balanced, and deeply intentional.

Lighting plays a central role in shaping that experience. Architectural forms are revealed with restraint and precision. Materials are allowed to speak for themselves. Custom illumination enhances scale and proportion while remaining visually unobtrusive. The goal is not to showcase lighting fixtures, but to create environments that feel naturally composed and comfortable at every hour.

Electrical engineering and control systems further support this vision. Thoughtfully programmed lighting scenes and motorized shading work together to adapt to changing daylight, activities, and moods. The home responds intuitively, maintaining visual comfort while preserving the architectural intent throughout the day and into the evening.

What makes projects like this truly enduring is the attention to detail across every layer of design. Nothing is accidental. Every decision is made in service of how the home is lived in — how spaces transition, how light interacts with surfaces, and how technology remains present yet invisible.

Our higher honor is Embodying Timeless Artistry in lighting and technology.

Recognition and awards are never the goal, but they serve as affirmation of a disciplined, collaborative process. They reflect the shared commitment between client, design team, and consultants to pursue excellence without compromise.

Timeless artistry is achieved when innovation is guided by experience and restraint. When design is thoughtful rather than trendy. When technology enhances rather than distracts. This residence stands as a reflection of that philosophy — a home designed to remain relevant, functional, and beautiful for generations.

If you’re considering a fully integrated lighting and technology approach for your home, we invite you to connect with Adaptive Design Group and begin the design conversation.

Reset with Restorative Lighting
Reset with Restorative Lighting 750 750 Adaptive Design Group, Inc.

Reset with Restorative Lighting

Reset with Restorative Lighting

When the days feel short, dark, and cold, spaces like this remind us how lighting can truly restore.

This Southern California patio comes alive through the subtle nuances of strategically placed illumination—guiding the eye, shaping the mood, and creating an inviting atmosphere that feels like a warm exhale.

This is where you reset.
Where the glow of the evening meets time spent with friends and loved ones.
Where thoughtful lighting design transforms outdoor living into an experience.

Outdoor spaces play an increasingly important role in luxury residential design, particularly in environments where climate allows for year-round use. Lighting determines whether these spaces feel like an extension of the home or an afterthought once the sun goes down.

Here, illumination is intentionally restrained. Rather than overwhelming the space, light is shaped and layered to create comfort, depth, and visual calm. Subtle highlights define architectural edges and surfaces, while softer ambient layers provide a sense of enclosure and warmth. The result is an environment that feels welcoming without feeling staged.

Strategic placement ensures the eye moves naturally through the space. Seating areas feel intimate. Circulation paths remain clear without drawing attention to the light source itself. Landscape elements add texture and quiet visual interest, reinforcing the connection between architecture and nature.

Lighting also plays an emotional role. Carefully balanced contrast reduces visual fatigue and allows the space to feel restorative rather than stimulating. This is especially important in outdoor environments designed for unwinding at the end of the day. Light supports relaxation, conversation, and connection — never distraction.

The success of spaces like this lies in early coordination between architectural design, materials, and lighting strategy. When lighting is considered from the beginning, it enhances form and function simultaneously. Fixtures integrate seamlessly. Light reveals the intent of the space rather than competing with it.

As evening settles in, the patio becomes a place of pause. A setting where time slows, conversations linger, and the atmosphere supports presence rather than productivity. Lighting does not announce itself — it simply works, quietly and beautifully.

This is the power of a reset with restorative lighting: creating environments that feel balanced, intentional, and deeply human.

If you’re looking to create outdoor spaces that restore as much as they inspire, we invite you to connect with Adaptive Design Group and explore what thoughtful lighting can achieve.

Custom Bar Backlighting
Custom Bar Backlighting 750 750 Adaptive Design Group, Inc.

Custom Bar Backlighting

Custom Bar Backlighting

Custom backlighting a bar does more than elevate the aesthetic—it becomes the anchor of the room.

In this space, our lighting design is seamlessly integrated into the bespoke shelving and layered throughout the environment, creating a cohesive balance of style, flow, and function.

Every layer is intentional.
Every detail enhances the experience.
This is lighting as a design language.

In luxury residential interiors, spaces designed for gathering and hospitality demand a heightened level of attention. Custom bar backlighting is not simply a functional element — it is a destination. Lighting defines its presence, sets its tone, and determines how the space is experienced.

Here, illumination is built directly into the architecture of the shelving, allowing materials, craftsmanship, and form to take center stage. Light reveals texture and depth without overpowering the composition. Glassware, finishes, and structural details are softly highlighted, creating visual rhythm and balance throughout the room.

Layered lighting ensures the bar feels connected to its surrounding environment. Accent illumination provides focus and intimacy, while ambient layers maintain comfort and cohesion with adjacent spaces. The result is a space that feels intentional from every angle — inviting without being theatrical, refined without feeling formal.

Control plays a critical role. Carefully engineered dimming allows the environment to shift seamlessly from lively social gatherings to quieter, more intimate moments. The lighting adapts naturally, preserving atmosphere while maintaining clarity and visual comfort.

When lighting is integrated early in the design process, opportunities like this emerge effortlessly. Millwork, materials, and lighting are designed together, rather than competing for attention. Fixtures disappear into the architecture. Light becomes a shaping tool rather than a visible source.

This approach transforms the bar into a focal point that feels architectural rather than decorative. It anchors the room, guides movement, and supports how the space is used — whether for entertaining guests or enjoying a quiet evening at home.

Thoughtful lighting elevates craftsmanship and reinforces the design narrative of the home. It speaks subtly, but with authority. The space feels composed, purposeful, and complete.

If you’re designing a custom interior where lighting should be integrated seamlessly into the architecture, we invite you to connect with Adaptive Design Group and begin the conversation.

Elegant Space is Illuminated
Elegant Space is Illuminated 750 750 Adaptive Design Group, Inc.

Elegant Space is Illuminated

Elegant Space is Illuminated

A dining room that commands presence.

This elegant space is illuminated using our signature Layered Lighting, a cornerstone of the Adaptive Method®, designed to shape mood, define architecture, and elevate every moment around the table.

From the exquisite chandelier to the subtle accents that sculpt the room’s features, every layer works together to create harmony, intention, and atmosphere.

Lighting is not just an accessory—it’s an experience.
Let’s design it beautifully.

In luxury residential design, the dining room holds a unique role. It is both ceremonial and personal — a place for daily connection and meaningful gatherings alike. Lighting must support that dual purpose, balancing visual clarity with warmth, intimacy, and architectural presence.

Here, illumination is composed with precision. The chandelier anchors the space, establishing scale and elegance while serving as a visual focal point. Its form complements the architecture rather than overpowering it, setting the tone for the room. Surrounding layers quietly reinforce this centerpiece, adding depth and softness without drawing attention away from the experience at the table.

Subtle accent lighting enhances architectural details, textures, and finishes, allowing materials to reveal themselves naturally. Walls feel dimensional rather than flat. Ceiling volumes feel intentional rather than undefined. Light gently sculpts the space, creating visual interest from every angle while maintaining a calm, composed atmosphere.

Equally important is control. Thoughtfully engineered dimming ensures the space adapts effortlessly — brighter for lively gatherings, softer for intimate evenings. The transition is seamless, allowing the mood to shift without disruption. This flexibility is essential in a space designed for connection, conversation, and shared moments.

By integrating lighting early in the architectural and interior design process, every element works together in harmony. Fixtures are placed with intention. Light is shaped rather than scattered. The result is a dining environment that feels timeless, refined, and deeply considered.

When layered lighting is executed with care, the room doesn’t just look beautiful — it feels right. Guests linger longer. Conversations flow more naturally. The space supports the experience rather than distracting from it.

If you’re planning a dining space where architecture, atmosphere, and experience matter equally, we invite you to connect with Adaptive Design Group and begin the design process together.

Comfort Meets Serenity
Comfort Meets Serenity 750 750 Adaptive Design Group, Inc.

Comfort Meets Serenity

Comfort Meets Serenity

Where indoor comfort meets outdoor serenity.

As the sun sets, the lighting becomes an intentional extension of the home’s interior design — carrying the same warmth, balance, and visual rhythm into the pool deck, lounge areas, and landscape.

Thoughtful illumination softens transitions, highlights architectural lines, and creates a cohesive environment that feels as inviting outside as it does within. The result is a seamless flow for relaxing evenings or effortless entertaining, all elevated by lighting that connects every space.

In luxury residential design, the boundary between indoors and outdoors is no longer a fixed threshold. Large openings, expansive glazing, and integrated outdoor living areas invite continuity — and lighting plays a critical role in maintaining that connection after dark. When designed intentionally, exterior lighting reinforces the same sense of comfort, scale, and refinement found inside the home.

Subtle layers of illumination define gathering areas without overpowering the surrounding landscape. Pool decks and terraces are gently guided with low-level path lighting, while architectural features are revealed through controlled highlights that respect material, form, and proportion. Landscape elements add depth and texture, enhancing the environment without distraction.

The goal is balance. Exterior lighting should never feel theatrical or excessive. Instead, it should support how the space is used — providing clarity for movement, comfort for relaxation, and atmosphere for social moments. Light is carefully shaped and positioned to avoid glare, preserve night skies, and maintain a calm visual experience.

When interior and exterior lighting are designed as a single, unified system, the home feels larger, more connected, and more inviting. Sightlines remain comfortable. Views outward feel intentional rather than stark. The exterior becomes an extension of daily living rather than a space that disappears after sunset.

This level of cohesion is achieved through early collaboration between the architect, interior designer, and lighting designer — ensuring materials, architectural details, and exterior spaces are considered holistically. The result is a residence that transitions naturally from day to night, indoors to outdoors, without interruption.

Lighting that connects every space creates environments that feel serene, effortless, and timeless — spaces where comfort doesn’t end at the threshold, and evenings unfold with quiet elegance.

If you’re ready to explore how lighting can unify your interior and exterior spaces, we invite you to connect with Adaptive Design Group and begin the conversation.

Light Leads the Way
Light Leads the Way 750 750 Adaptive Design Group, Inc.

Light Leads the Way

Light Leads the Way

In this home, light leads the way — not as an accent applied after construction, but as a guiding element woven into the architecture from the earliest design phase.

The vaulted stairwell becomes more than a vertical transition. Carefully layered illumination highlights its scale and structure while maintaining a quiet, composed presence. Decorative fixtures introduce a sense of rhythm and visual refinement, while discreet functional lighting ensures each step is softly and safely defined. The result is not brightness for its own sake, but clarity — a balance of form, function, and comfort.

As light carries through the living spaces, it does so with continuity and intention. Transitions are seamless. Spaces unfold naturally. The eye moves effortlessly from one area to the next, guided by light that supports architecture rather than competing with it. This sense of flow is achieved through thoughtful coordination between architectural forms, interior finishes, and precisely engineered lighting solutions.

Early integration is essential. When lighting design begins at the blueprint phase, it allows structural elements, ceiling details, materials, and circulation paths to inform the placement and performance of light. Vaults, planes, and volumes are illuminated intentionally, preserving the integrity of the design while enhancing the lived experience of the home. Nothing feels added later. Nothing feels excessive.

The stairwell becomes an architectural moment — an experience. Subtle path illumination provides orientation without visual distraction. Decorative elements contribute warmth and presence without overpowering the space. Light supports movement, reveals craftsmanship, and reinforces the home’s overall design language.

This approach reflects a deeper philosophy: lighting should feel natural, almost invisible. When done correctly, it creates an environment that is both functional and emotionally resonant. Residents don’t notice the fixtures — they notice how the home feels at night. Calm. Balanced. Inviting.

Beautiful design becomes effortless when lighting is considered early and executed with precision. When light leads the way, architecture speaks clearly, spaces feel intentional, and the home reveals itself exactly as it was meant to be experienced — thoughtfully, comfortably, and with quiet confidence.

Designing Warm Welcomes
Designing Warm Welcomes 750 750 Adaptive Design Group, Inc.

Designing Warm Welcomes

Designing Warm Welcomes

A warm welcome, the moment you arrive.

Thoughtfully layered architectural and landscape lighting guides you home with gentle glow and natural warmth — enhancing safety, emphasizing design, and elevating the experience of arrival.

The arrival sequence of a home is one of the most important aspects of architectural design, yet it’s often overlooked when lighting is treated as an afterthought. At Adaptive Design Group, we view the exterior approach as the first chapter in the story a residence tells — a moment where light, architecture, and landscape work together to create an atmosphere of comfort, intention, and belonging.

The process of designing warm welcomes, starts with understanding.

Designing a warm welcome begins long before a single fixture is installed. It starts by understanding the home’s orientation, natural landscape features, material palette, and architectural rhythm. Our process ensures that lighting enhances these elements rather than competes with them. Pathways are softly illuminated to guide footsteps, driveways receive gentle gradients of light instead of harsh beams, and key architectural lines are highlighted with subtle precision to draw the eye toward the entry.

Landscape lighting plays an equally important role. By accentuating trees, plantings, stonework, and natural contours, we create depth that feels organic and inviting. Shadows become part of the composition, and the home settles comfortably into its surroundings. Instead of overpowering the property, the lighting supports it — shaping space, improving visibility, and creating emotional resonance the moment someone arrives.

Warmth is at the core of this approach. Through the careful use of color temperature, dimming, and fixture placement, we ensure the home feels lived-in and welcoming, not overlit or sterile. The glow at the entry should feel like an open door — an embrace of light that signals comfort and safety. This is where architectural lighting shifts from a technical element to a human experience.

Inside the home, this warm arrival seamlessly transitions through the foyer and into adjacent spaces. Exterior lighting is balanced with interior glow to avoid abrupt contrast, creating a gentle progression that feels cohesive and intentional. The goal is simple: a home that greets you softly, whether you’ve been gone for days or simply stepped outside for a moment.

When lighting is integrated early, the entire arrival sequence becomes more than functional — it becomes transformative. Light defines how the home is perceived from the street, how guests experience their first steps inside, and how each resident feels when returning after a long day. It’s an emotional touchpoint that sets the tone for the entire residence.

At Adaptive Design Group, we design these warm welcomes with the same care we apply to every layer of light within a home — blending technical expertise with artistic intention to elevate the experience of arrival from the very first glow.
